Recently, there was quite a lot of brouhaha about red and processed meat, after its appearance in the IARC's cancer list. Prevent asked me if I wanted to write an opinion piece about it. As a physician in preventive and occupational medicine, I have strong views about this subject, so I enthusiastically accepted. The article appeared recently in PreventActua. The setting The IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer), part of the WHO, published a press release on October 26. This states that a group of experts, after a thorough review of the scientific literature, has decided that there is sufficient evidence to classify red meat as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A), and processed meat as [definitely] carcinogenic to humans (Group 1).
